DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S Dr. Murete Lukumay has received accolades for her research presentation, which was among the issues that heralded the  37th ISGE annual meeting  and the 28th AGOTA congress held in Dar es Salaam from May 21 to 24 this year.

Her presentation on “The Significance of Dry Simulation Laboratory for Enhancing Laparoscopic Suturing Skills underscored the importance of simulation-based training in building surgical capacity, particularly in low-resource settings. This recognition served to highlight the innovative approaches being adopted within the field and encouraged further exploration of effective training methodologies.

Dr Lukumay was among the medical experts who participated in the International Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ISGE) and the Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians of Tanzania (AGOTA) recently co-hosted the 37th ISGE Annual Meeting in conjunction with the 28th AGOTA Congress from May 21 to 24, 2025, at Golden Tulip Hotel in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

This significant event brought together approximately 250 delegates from around the world, creating a vibrant platform for collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange in the field of gynecologic endoscopy and minimally invasive gynecological surgery (MIGS).

One of the key outcomes of the congress was the emphasis on capacity building in the region.

The Government of Zanzibar showcased its commitment to advancing women’s health by supporting the training of five healthcare providers in endoscopy.

Additionally, the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Laparoscopic Surgery at Lumumba Hospital signifies a strategic alignment with national and global priorities for maternal and reproductive health. This initiative highlights the importance of investing in local healthcare capabilities to improve outcomes for women and newborns.

The congress also featured five hands-on pre-congress workshops, which provided participants with practical skills and knowledge. Workshops covered various essential topics, including Hysteroscopy, Laparoscopic Suturing, and a Nurse Workshop focused on MIGS.

These sessions not only enhanced the skills of the attendees but also promoted practical learning and collaboration among healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds.

Research and recognition played a vital role in the congress, with Dr. Murete Lukumay from Tanzania receiving accolades for her presentation on “The Significance of Dry Simulation Laboratory for Enhancing Laparoscopic Suturing Skills.”

The congress concluded with a significant leadership transition, as Dr. Anneli Linnamägi from Finland was elected as the new President of ISGE, while Dr. Sunday Dominic assumed the presidency for AGOTA. This change in leadership indicates a commitment to continued growth and collaboration within both organizations, ensuring that the goals of improving reproductive health services remain a priority.

The event was officiated by Second Vice President of Zanzibar, Hemed Suleiman Abdullah who emphasized the government’s ongoing support for maternal and reproductive health initiatives. His presence underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and professional associations in addressing health challenges faced by women and newborns.

The success of this landmark event can also be attributed to the exceptional efforts of the event management team. Their meticulous coordination of logistics, seamless execution of the program, and facilitation of engaging interactions among delegates created a conducive atmosphere for learning and networking.

The attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the management team were crucial in delivering a near-perfect conference experience.

In particular, Showtime, Zanzibar’s premier event management company, played a pivotal role in the successful execution of the congress. Their expertise in managing complex events ensured that every aspect, from venue selection to technical support, was handled with precision. Mr. Ibrahim Mitawi, the CEO of Showtime, remarked, “Our goal is to create memorable experiences that exceed expectations. We are proud to have contributed to the success of this important congress, fostering collaboration and innovation in women’s health.” This commitment to excellence and collaboration underscores the vital role that professional event management plays in the success of international conferences.

In conclusion, the ISGE and AGOTA congress served not only as a platform for scientific discourse but also reinforced the importance of collaboration in addressing global health challenges. As participants return to their respective countries, they carry with them new insights, strengthened networks, and a renewed commitment to improving women’s health outcomes. The event stands as a testament to the power of partnership and collective effort in advancing healthcare for women and children in Tanzania and beyond.
